  5. Thank you for using this SSEYO Koan product !
  6.  
  7. Depending on how you downloaded this product, the first thing you will probably
  8. need to do is to install the product. Instructions for doing this are given
  9. below.
  10.  
  11. The SSEYO Koan Plugin (also referred to by web developers as the Interactive
  12. Music Control - IKMC), is available in various "flavours".
  13.   The ActiveX Control flavour is used by Internet Explorer : it is available
  14.      for Windows 95/98/NT4 and later only.
  15.   The LiveConnect Plug-in flavour is used by Netscape Navigator and
  16.      Communicator : it is available for both Windows 95/98/NT4 and later,
  17.      and MacOS 7.5 and later.

  19. If you have downloaded the primary install for Windows, then both the SSEYO
  20. Koan Active X control and the SSEYO Koan LiveConnect Plug-in flavours will be
  21. installed (the latter will also be installed under any 32-bit browser program
  22. that can be detected by the setup program, including Internet Explorer and
  23. Netscape Navigator/Communicator).

  25. The SSEYO Koan Plugin is very highly programmable and interactive !

  31. What's new in the V6.0 release - 31st March 1999 ?

  34. The V6.0 release of the Koan Plugin contains a huge amount of extra
  35. functionality, aimed at making it easy to use with Flash, DHTML and
  36. other Javascript programmable web animation software products.
  37. The net result is that web pages worldwide will easily be able to combine
  38. interactive music with interactive animations : with both feeding each other !

  70. How do I load local files ?
  71. =============================================================================

  73. If you have the basic, free Koan Plugin, you will *not* be able to load local
  74. files from your hard disk.
  75.  
  76. If you upgrade to Koan Plugin VKE, then you will be able to open SSEYO Koan Files
  77. (*.skp, *.skd, *.skt, *.skm) straight from your hard disk.
  78.   With Netscape Navigator : use the File Open menu and select the appropriate
  79.     file type;
  80.   With Netscape Navigator : open a blank page and use Explorer (Windows)
  81.     or Finder (Mac) to drag the appropriate Koan file icon onto the blank page.
  82.   With Microsoft Internet Explorer : open a blank page and use Explorer
  83.     (Windows) or Finder (Mac) to drag the appropriate Koan file icon onto
  84.     the blank page.

  86. Use your mouse to click on the Koan icon that is displayed, and the file
  87. will play automatically !

  90. Plug-in and Active X Control Tips
  91. =============================================================================

  93. There is a considerable amount of functionality that you can access from both
  94. the Plug-in and Active X controls, by using the mouse button to click on the
  95. flashing Koan icon. This causes a pop-up menu to be displayed, from which you
  96. can select the option you want.

  98. Mouse Menu option                     What it does
  99. ----------------------------          ------------
  100. "Play..."                             Play the piece.
  101. "Rewind ..."                          Rewind the piece by 10%.
  102. "Forward ..."                         Fast-forward the piece by 10%.
  103. "Stop..."                             Stop the piece playing.
  104. "Pause..."                            Pause the playing piece.
  105. "Continue..."                         Continue playing the paused piece.
  106. "Record Koan music ..."               Record the session to MIDI or WAV file.
  107. "Save to play file ..."               Save a play-only (.skp) version of the
  108.                                       current edited version of the piece
  109.                                       (which must be either a .skd or .skt file).
  110. "Save to development file ..."        Saves the edited version of the piece
  111.                                       to a local .skd file.
  112.                                       available with Koan Plugin or Koan Plugin VKE.
  113.                                       Feature available only in Koan Plugin XE
  114.                                       (bundled with Koan X - saves as a protected
  115.                                       skt template file) and Koan Plugin PE
  116.                                       (bundled with Koan Pro - saves as an skd file).
  117.                                       For Koan Plugin VKE, the file is instead
  118.                                       saved as a protected template file.
  119. "Save copy of file ..."               Saves a local copy, of the current piece,
  120.                                       which can be either an .SKP, .SKD, .SKT or .MID
  121.                                       file.  Feature only available in Koan
  122.                                       Plugin XE and PE.
  123. "View Piece Details ..."              View the author's piece notes
  124. "Setup ..."                           Start the Setup dialog, where you can
  125.                                       configure the Koan Plugin, enable/disable
  126.                                       Direct Sound support etc.
  127. "Abort Download..."                   Abort the download of any currently
  128.                                       downloading Koan files.
  129. "Launch Koan Helper Application ..."  Launch the Koan Helper application,
  130.                                       if any is available for the current piece type.
  131. "About SSEYO Koan Plugin ..."         Display version and other information.
  132. "Connect to SSEYO Koan home page"     Connect to the SSEYO home page (http://www.sseyo.com)

  159. No Sound ?

  162. If you are getting no sound output from your SSEYO Koan product, please
  163. check the following :
  164.  
  165. 1. Check that you have a valid MIDI Output device specified (check : the
  166.    Setup Options dialog, available through your SSEYO Koan product's Menu).
  167.    SSEYO Koan will default to use the Midi Mapper, which may not have been
  168.    specified properly on your machine - in which case, you can either set-up
  169.    the Midi Mapper properly, or change the Midi Output device to instead be the
  170.    direct driver for your soundcard.
  171.    (Note : for Win 95 users, the MIDI mapper is the default instrument, which
  172.    is defined through Control Panel / Multimedia / MIDI  ... the instrument
  173.    you specify here, is that selected when you specify "MIDI Mapper" as your
  174.    Koan Midi Output Device.)
  175.  
  176. 2. Check that you have at least 1 MIDI device available on your system ! If you
  177.    have none (very rare), then you must either buy a new soundcard which
  178.    supports MIDI, or get hold of some of the new software-only synth drivers,
  179.    such as the Yamaha SoftSynth.
  180.  
  181. 3. Check that you have not specified "SB16 Midi Out" or some other device by
  182.    mistake, without having an external sound source connected !
  183.  
  184. 4. Check that you have not set the SSEYO Koan master volume level to 0 or very
  185.    low.
  186.  
  187. 5. Make sure that you have not used Koan Web to mute your SSEYO Koan output.
  188.  
  189. 6. Check that your soundcard's master Midi output level has not been set to 0
  190.    or very low, or muted altogether.
